REMS: What To Expect

Treatment
Your healthcare provider will continue to be involved with your care during SPRAVATO treatment and will be available to answer any questions or concerns. During your initial treatment, we will review your medical information, verify your insurance, and confirm your enrollment in the SPRAVATO REMS Program.
A Spravato treatment appointment at New Way Wellness is a structured and carefully monitored session, as it involves the administration of esketamine, a medication for treatment-resistant depression. Here’s what a typical appointment looks like: First Appointment: Screening: The provider reviews the patient’s medical history, current medications, and recent health status to ensure they are a suitable candidate for the treatment. The clinic ensures that the patient has arranged for a responsible adult to drive them home, as they cannot drive for 24 hours post-treatment. Arrival and Check-In: The patient arrives at New Way Wellness and checks in with reception. Since the clinic values individualized care, the environment is calm and welcoming, designed to put patients at ease. First time patients need to not have anything to eat or drink for at least 2 hours before treatment. Otherwise, patients may be offered light refreshments and water as they settle in. Pre-Treatment Assessment: Stephanie or another trained healthcare provider conducts a brief assessment to ensure the patient is ready for the session. This includes checking vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, and oxygen levels) and confirming that the patient is feeling well enough to proceed. Administration of Spravato: The patient is guided to a comfortable area where they can recline and relax during the treatment. Spravato is administered via a nasal spray under direct supervision of the care team. The patient self-administers the medication with guidance, and the dose is adjusted according to their treatment plan. Observation Period (2 Hours): After the administration, the patient remains in the clinic for a minimum of two hours for observation. This is to monitor for any side effects or reactions, as well as to ensure the patient's safety. During this time, Stephanie and her team check the patient’s vital signs periodically and provide a calm, quiet environment to minimize any stress or anxiety. Patients are encouraged to rest, listen to music, or engage in quiet activities. Post-Treatment Assessment: After the observation period, the healthcare team conducts a final assessment to ensure the patient is stable and feeling well enough to leave. Instructions for aftercare are provided, including reminders about the importance of not driving until after a restful night's sleep and being aware of any potential side effects like dizziness or nausea. Transportation Home: Since patients cannot drive after the treatment, the clinic confirms that the patient’s designated driver has arrived to take them home. Patients are encouraged to rest for the remainder of the day and to reach out to the clinic with any concerns or questions. Follow-Up: New Way Wellness schedules follow-up appointments to track the patient's progress and adjust the treatment plan as needed. Patients typically require multiple sessions, with a structured plan laid out to maximize the therapeutic benefits of Spravato. This approach ensures that patients receive personalized care throughout the process, with a focus on their safety, comfort, and therapeutic progress
